GI vs MS Pipe Nipples: Which One Should You Buy?

GI and MS Pipe Nipples look almost the same in a drawing, but they are made for different jobs. Choosing the right one saves money and avoids rust problems later.
What is a pipe nipple?
A pipe nipple is a short length of pipe with threads on both ends. It joins two threaded fittings, or connects a pipe line to a fitting or a piece of equipment. Nipples are sold by size (the pipe size, like ½” or 2”) and length.
GI Pipe Nipples
GI stands for galvanised iron. A GI nipple is made from steel pipe with a zinc coating. The zinc protects the steel from rust, so GI is the usual choice wherever water flows through the pipe for years.
Common uses:
- Drinking water supply lines
- Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) / Har Ghar Jal projects
- Agriculture and irrigation lines
MS Pipe Nipples
MS stands for mild steel. An MS nipple is made from black steel pipe without a zinc coating. It is strong and more economical than GI.
Common uses:
- Fire-fighting lines
- Industrial piping
- HVAC chilled water lines
